August at Mabry Mill: Newly Reopened Landmark for Family Fun & History

Visit this freshly restored spot for demos, tours & mountain charm all month

I have to say it — I LOVE summer. Long days, warm sunshine, ice cream after dinner, and family adventures are my favorite parts of the year. But lately, these unseasonably cool mornings have been sneaking in, giving just a tiny hint of fall. And while I’m not ready to trade my flip-flops for boots just yet, it has gotten me thinking about my fall bucket list.

One spot that’s right at the top? Mabry Mill —  one of the most photographed historic gems along the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you’ve never been, it’s just over an hour drive from most areas in the New River Valley, making it perfect for a family day trip or a weekend getaway. It’s absolutely stunning in the fall when the leaves change, but honestly, it’s a treat to visit in any season.

And here’s some exciting news: Mabry Mill is officially back open!
After a roof restoration project, the historic preservation crew has replaced the weathered roof with fresh white oak shakes. Thanks to support from the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, its donors, and NPS funding, this beloved site is ready for visitors again.

If you’re looking for one last summer adventure — especially in August — Mabry Mill has a packed schedule of family-friendly activities now through August 31st:

  • Blacksmithing Demonstrations (Thursdays–Sundays, 11 am–3 pm): Watch as a piece of blazing hot metal — heated to roughly 1,000°F — is pulled from the forge and shaped on the anvil. Will it become a tool, a hinge, or something entirely unexpected? You’ll have to come see for yourself! Park staff will share the history and importance of blacksmithing along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
  • Corn Husk Doll Making (Sundays, 11 am or 2 pm): Learn the creative process behind this traditional Appalachian craft. A ranger will tell you the story of corn husk dolls and add her own personal touch to one as you watch.
  • Guided Tours (Sundays, 11 am and 1 pm): Take a half-mile guided walk around the Mabry Mill grounds as a ranger shares stories of the family who once lived here. Along the way, you’ll see live craft demonstrations and get a true feel for the site’s history.
  • Spinning & Weaving Demonstrations (Thursdays, 11 am–2 pm): See how raw fiber is transformed into yarn with a spinning wheel and drop spindle, and then watch it be woven into clothing — a skill passed down for generations in the Blue Ridge region.

The best part? All of these programs are free and don’t require reservations. You can find more details and plan your visit at nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/calendar.htm.

So for now, I’ll keep soaking up every bit of summer sunshine. But knowing Mabry Mill is open — and offering these incredible hands-on experiences — means I’ve already found the perfect excuse for one more summer day trip with the family before the season says goodbye.
